Intuition, Mathematically Composed

Early Math

Around 1990 I had an insight into how to best relate three or more areas, textures, or values to each other. I started to build my paintings with the math underlying that relationship. After 1990 I still experimented with using purely intuition to create art but I was very concerned with forming a clear understanding of structure and defining the relationship between math and the perception of beauty. Eventually, I developed a system that defines the boundaries of intuition within a mathematical framework of balance, unity, and diversity. My early math period represents the art that was produced during the transition to the use of my system. At this time I was still using the standard color wheel to compose my colors.
